Inflammatory bowel disease

Dr Moodie manages a large number of patients with Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. At Epsom Hospital he works with an inflammatory bowel disease specialist nurse as part of the IBD service. These patients with chronic inflamatory bowel disease often require immunomodulatory and immunosuppressive drugs such as azathioprine, 6-mercaptopurine, methotrexate, cyclosporine, infliximab, adalimumab. Protocols and guidelines for safe administration and monitoring of these drugs are established. There is a close working relationship with gastroenterological surgeons with joint meetings to discuss cases once a week.

Food intolearce, food sensitivity, food allergies, irritable bowel syndrome, small bowel disease

With extensive research pedigree in this area, Dr Moodie is an expert on coeliac disease and works closely with Kristina Zeremba, the local coelaic dietician in providing a service for coeliac disease sufferers in the region. The area of food intolerance/sensitivity/allergy is a complex one and Dr Moodie is happy to see referrals of this nature - patients may need various investigations including blood and stool analysis, small bowel biopsies, lactose/fructose/lactulose breath tests, structured elimination diets and immunological testing.

Dyspepsia, heartburn, abdomial pains, indigestion

Patients with these conditions may require gastroscopy, ultrasound, CT and other investigations. Oesophageal physiology (manometry, pH studies) are currently available within Epsom and St Helier Trust at the St Helier site.

Colon cancer screening, colonoscopy and polypectomy

As part of the Cancer Network seeing two week rule referrals for both suspected upper and lower GI cancer, Dr Moodie performs a large number of colonoscopies every week.

Oesophageal and gastric cancer

Dr Moodie is currently clinical lead physician for upper GI cancer in the Epsom and St Helier Trust, Epsom site. Most of the service is diagnostic (endoscopy), with patients then managed by the Royal Marsden cancer centre. Dr Moodie may become involved in the ongoing managemnt of these patients for endoscopic therapies such as oesophageal stenting, feeding tube placement, argon plasma coagulation.

Liver disease

Having worked at the local tertiary liver centre at King's college hospital, Dr Moodie retains close personal links. Patients with some specialist liver disease (liver cancer, liver masses, cirrhosis considered amenable to liver transplant) are discussed and referred at an early stage for managemnt by he King's liver unit, However, most chronic liver disorders are investigated and managed by Dr Moodie locally. Dr Moodie, Dr Lim and the unit's specialist nurse sister Tang offer a viral hepatitis service at Epsom Hospital for the treatment of hepatitis B and C.
